Proposed Dates and Deadlines Ahead: Transaction Un-Freeze, Spring Rosters, Trade Deadline, More

Chicago Cubs

While the league and players work to finalize the initial health and safety protocols, the players have informed the league that they do intend to report to Spring Training Part Two by July 1, thus allowing a 60-game regular season, which would kick off around July 24 and end on September 27.

Among the other dates and deadlines that are being reported:

•   The transaction freeze, which has been in place since March, is due to un-freeze on Friday at noon ET. As we’ve discussed, it’s conceivable that teams will be trying to unload players throughout Spring Training Part Two, though I don’t know that there will actually be a flurry of moves right then on Friday.

•   Teams must submit a 60-player list of guys who MIGHT participate this year by Sunday at 3pm ET. The presumption is that it’ll be made up of guys participating in Spring Training Part Two, who might make the big league roster out of the gate, and/or who will be on the taxi squad.

•   Active roster drops from 30 to 28 on the 15th day of the season, and then down to the usual 26 on the 29th day of the season.

•   The Trade Deadline will be August 31, more or less marking the halfway point of the season. I wouldn’t expect a feverish deadline this year, for a variety of reasons.
