The Cubs sent 4th and 5th starters Tyler Chatwood and Alec Mills to the mound last night, with Chatwood pitching into the 5th inning and Mills pitching into the 4th. By the accounts of those on hand, it looks like each gave up at least a couple runs, but also notched a few strikeouts and no(?) walks. Just stay healthy and stretch out, gentlemen.
It was the much lesser concern at the moment given Albert Almora’s injury, but since Almora returned to the game, we can now note that the play happened on a ball Kris Bryant nearly sent out of the park … off of Craig Kimbrel. I’m not saying it MEANS something, I’m just noting it to add to the previous discussion. And, hey, Bryant is a pretty good hitter. And, hey, Kimbrel otherwise worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Brad Wieck and Dillon Maples were among the other relievers who got work in last night.
Josh Phegley hit his second homer of Summer Camp, as he clearly was energized by chatter that the Cubs might carry three catchers to open the season.
Kyle Schwarber had Tyler Chatwood’s number, hitting a homer and a double:

Nico Hoerner had a couple hits in the game, and seems to be getting along all right so far this Summer Camp. He’s competing for a starting nod at second base, and one of the other second basemen showed off some good defense:
