For the second time through the first 10 games, we have a “Kris Bryant is back!” lineup title. There was never any injury this time, however, as he returns from the requisite negative COVID-19 tests after self-reporting symptoms over the weekend. Good for Bryant. Here’s how the rest of the Cubs lineup falls in behind their leadoff man.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:Â
1. Kris Bryant, LF
2. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
3. Javy Baez, SS
4. Willson Contreras, C
5. Kyle Schwarber, DH
6. David Bote, 3B
7. Jason Heyward, RF
8. Nico Hoerner, 2B
9. Ian Happ, CF
As you’ll notice, Bryant is not back at third base tonight, but is instead moving out to left field. In his place, David Bote, who’s currently tied for the third highest barrels per batted ball event in all of MLB this season, is back in the lineup at third base. He’s got only 21 plate appearances so far, but they’ve been very productive: .278/.381/.667 (181 wRC+).
With Bryant out in left field, Kyle Schwarber becomes the designated hitter for just the second time this season, which gives Victor Caratini a day off against the lefty, Danny Duffy.
Speaking of which, with a lefty on the mound tonight, David Ross elected not to give Albert Almora Jr. the start in center field. Duffy did have reverse splits last season, but that was just 130.2 IP. For his career (1064.1 IP, including 2o19), righties (.259/.332/.433) have done much more damage than lefties (.217/.278/.312) – to say nothing of Almora’s former strengths.
We can’t say for sure this is the beginning of the end for the Almora platoon experiment, especially because Ian Happ hasn’t himself been that great against southpaws, but it’s notable nonetheless.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time.
