I’d planned to get into more of the non-Cub rumors and news before the game today, but the combination of lots to get into from last night, plus the Cubs trade for Jose Martinez, plus the very early game today, meant it just wasn’t happening. Then the game, itself, was so busy, and then there was the Indians thing, that I’m just now getting an exhale to catch back up on all that went down this afternoon.
Padres Keep Pushing
The Padres, having already traded for reliever Trevor Rosenthal, added big lefty bat Mitch Moreland today for some legit prospects:
Third baseman Hudson Potts, a former first-round pick, was the Padres’ No. 16 prospect, per @MLBPipeline. Outfielder Jeisson Rosario was No. 19. Padres inherit Moreland’s $3M option for 2021. Likely DH.

And now they’re hot on the trail of some big-name starting pitcher:
The Padres are heavy into a big-name starter right now. If I knew who, I’d say.
But I’m assured by a couple people they are working on something big.
Also have at least one more lesser deal in works.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) August 30, 2020
Is Lance Lynn big enough? Maybe they’re the team in on Mike Clevinger? Some other big name we haven’t heard about yet? Whatever the case, the Padres are not effing around this year, knowing that getting into the playoffs gets them a three-game series in the first round just like it does the Dodgers.
Rangers Have the Biggest Fish Who Could Actually Move?
Speaking of Lynn, the rumors about him being traded have really picked up steam, as have rumors about his teammate Joey Gallo.

In addition to Lance Lynn, the Texas Rangers have been discussing outfielder Joey Gallo in potential trades, sources tell ESPN. The price on both is high, and it's why one GM said "the Rangers hold the keys to the deadline." If they do sell, it's impact guys in pennant races.

Basically every team you’ve seen rumored to be interested in starting pitching is currently attached to Lynn, though Gallo’s market is harder to discern. The 26-year-old outfielder comes with two more years of control, and does three true outcomes unlike any player in baseball. The mind starts to think about ways you could fit him on the Cubs, but it’s just not there. Not realistic.
Dodgers and Hader?
Whatever. I say do it:
Dodgers are among teams that have checked in on Josh Hader. Not many available players would improve the excellent Dodgers, but he’d give them arguably baseball’s best bullpen.

Rockies Pick Up a Quality Relief Arm
After a couple down years, Mychal Givens is pitching really well again this year, and comes with another year of team control:
The Rockies announced today that they have acquired RHP Mychal Givens from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Minor League infielders Tyler Nevin and Terrin Vavra, as well as a player to be named later or cash considerations.

That’s a very legit trade right there, netting the Orioles two of the Rockies’ 15-ish best prospects.
The Hot Dog Sandwiches
As for the BN Dogathon fundraiser for Make-A-Wish, your generosity has not only contributed nearly $6,000 to Make-A-Wish Illinois, you’ve pushed me up to at least 12 hot dogs to eat between today and tomorrow (and I can eat nothing else!). I just finished dog number five, which really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The carrots definitely didn’t play, but the broccoli, cauliflower, and dip definitely worked together with the dog:

Writing up a Padres deal means #BNDogathon sandwich number two is just mustard to give it the yellow and brown look. pic.twitter.com/AlKEjT6TYi

My first truly and completely stupid #BNDogathon sandwich: a veggie dog. But it’s actually just a hot dog with veggies and dip on top. Let’s get weird (and totally healthy) for number 5. pic.twitter.com/muEXeNHCpu
