Thanks to the Brewers absolutely drubbing the Cardinals last night (18-3, with a dust-up mixed in), the Cardinals fell to 5.0 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central, further clustering the trio of teams currently vying for second place.
The Reds won their 4th in a row, so now the three teams are more or less a lump, 5-6 games behind the Cubs:
The Brewers and Cardinals have a doubleheader today, and it’s to the point where if either one wants any chance of passing the Cubs, they’ve gotta sweep today (and then also probably win at least 4 of 5 in next weekend’s series), and hope the Cubs fall on their faces. It’s just so hard for either of the Cardinals or Brewers right now because they play each other so much.
Meanwhile, the Reds will finish their series against the Pirates today before a much more challenging set against the White Sox this weekend. Then the Reds get the Brewers, which will further complicate each of their attempts to come back on the Cubs.
Thanks to the Cardinals’ loss and the Cubs’ win last night, the divisional magic number is down to Ron Santo:
