Chicago Cubs Lineup: Heyward Moves Up to Third as Happ Gets the Day Off

Chicago Cubs

Normally, when Anthony Rizzo leads off a game, I get all excited and say something like THE GREATEST LEADOFF HITTER OF ALL TIME RETURNS … but it doesn’t feel earned. Not by him, in particular, but by this Cubs offense which is scuffling so badly. Here’s the lineup for the finale in Pittsburgh.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

1. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
2. Willson Contreras, DH
3. Jason Heyward, RF
4. Kyle Schwarber, LF
5. Cameron Maybin, CF
6. Jason Kipnis, 2B
7. Javy Baez, SS
8. Victor Caratini, C
9. David Bote, 3B

With Ian Happ getting a day off and Kris Bryant still on the shelf, this lineup is all over the place relative to its usual state.

Aside from Rizzo leading off, we’ve got Willson Contreras batting second as the DH (Victor Caratini is behind the plate), Jason Heyward batting third, and Cameron Maybin playing center and batting fifth. Javy Baez continues to lead the bottom third of the order while David Bote turns everything over at 9th.

Altogether, there are four lefties, four righties, and a switch hitter for Chad Kuhl, yet another struggling Pirates pitcher whom the Cubs have previously handled just fine ….

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (12:35 CT).
