Late in today’s 5-1 Marlins win over the Cubs, a pitch got away from Dan Winkler, hitting outfielder Starling Marte on the hand.
He was in immediate pain, and you could tell it was the “damn it, I’m injured” kind of pain:
Marte left the game for tests, which reportedly revealed a fractured pinkie. Marte, one of the Marlins’ best regulars, had departed his last game after a hit by pitch, too. Rough stretch for him.
As for what it means in this series, the report at MLB.com indicates Marte is being considered day-to-day. Since the fracture is in his left hand, rather than his throwing hand, and it’s only the pinkie – hey, who needs a pinkie? – it does seem possible that he could play through the injury as soon as tomorrow.
