Jon Lester officially became a free agent this weekend, as the Chicago Cubs bought him out of the $25 million option they held for 2020.
But while the Cubs were buying Lester out, Lester was out buying beers for everyone who wanted one in Chicago. And it turned out that there were a lotta thirsty Cubs fans this weekend:
Thanks for coming out this weekend y’all! Yesterday we added 1,372 @MillerLites to my tab, bringing our grand total to 4,838. Shout out to all the bars, their staff, and those cheers-ing from afar! Whether this is goodbye or see you next year, I love you Chicago! #JonsTab pic.twitter.com/OTEIO2gOjc

That’s nearly 5,000 beers bought in a single weekend, which is just 50 shy of how many I’m gonna have at Nisei the next time I can go out after a Cubs game.
Lester has meant so much to this Cubs team and this city over the past six years. If this winds up being the way he goes out, then it was a perfect way to do it. And did you catch the gratuity? He took care of the servers and bartenders to the tune of a 34% tip. 34.
