Spring Training Miscellany: More Good Test Results, Working on Pitches, Alzolay BP, More

Chicago Cubs

MLB released data on this week’s round of COVID testing, and once again, the positivity rate was incredibly low. Things are going well so far at Spring Training as far as the pandemic goes.

Let’s hope it keeps up, and maybe we’ll get lucky enough to see nothing particularly scary over the next couple months before players and personnel can get vaccinated.

Elsewhere around Cubs camp …

This is partly just fun, but also partly really informative, as Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy talks to a couple of his new pitchers in Zach Davies and Trevor Williams:

Davies throwing a nice cutter, eh? We know the Cubs love them some cutters, and Davies’ was pretty successful for him in limited doses last year. And Williams throwing two different types of sliders, and the Cubs maybe working with him to get just one that works? It was by far his best whiff pitch last year, and actually had decent expected metrics, too.

Absolutely smoked this one:

So is that just good for Joc Pederson or not good for Adbert Alzolay? (I kid. It’s just practice!)

Two Cubs prospects were new arrivals today, Chase Strumpf and Andy Weber, and they’re already getting in work:

Ian Happ, excellent narrator of the mundane:

Among the reasons Cameron Maybin is back? Clearly, he hit it off with his teammates right away last year:
