I am aware that Anthony Rizzo, among many other Cubs, is scheduled to be a free agent after this season. Furthermore, I am aware that beloved players depart the teams and fans that love them every year. It is, of course, a real possibility that Rizzo could leave the Cubs for another club this coming offseason.
But I gotta tell you. This is the first time I’ve seen this type of report, and it made me feel ill to contemplate:
Anthony Rizzo and Carlos Correa are ideal free-agent targets for the #Marlins after this season, as @CaseyStern just mentioned on @MLBNetworkRadio. Miami's good, inexpensive rotation should allow them to spend on a position player. And Rizzo is from Broward County. @MLBNetwork

The idea of Rizzo, now entering his 10th season with the Cubs, could be out there in free agency talking to teams and being targeted by THE MARLINS … oof. I just don’t want to think about it. I mean, sure, if the Cubs don’t make a reasonable offer or decide they want to move on for whatever reason, then go get yours, Rizzo. But as the Captain of this club, it’s just so hard for me to think about Rizzo putting on another jersey after this season.
Here’s hoping we’ll look back and find out that, yeah, actually, Jed Hoyer and Anthony Rizzo actually were finalizing an extension right at this moment:
