Javy Báez Hit By Pitch, Immediately Leaves Game (UPDATE: WHEW)

It’s one of the dang effing risks of Spring Training as pitchers are still rounding their mechanics into shape (and others aren’t yet ready for big-league-level action). A pitcher gets wild, and he nails a key player with a fastball up and in.

It just happened to Javy Báez, with a 94 mph fastball that got away from Cal Quantrill with the bases loaded. It rode up and in, hitting Báez on the back (right) wrist/forearm. Báez spun away, immediately walked off the field and left the game in obvious pain. It was basically the perfect version of the thing you hate to see in Spring Training. Báez was replaced in the field thereafter by Andy Weber.

Updates coming when we have them. He was in obvious pain. I’m really hoping it’s one of those times that Báez shows a lot of discomfort, but is ultimately OK …

UPDATE: Oh thank goodness. Sounds like it was all the meat, and none of the bone:
