Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 4, Pirates 3 – April 4, 2021

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs won again, taking the series from the Pirates, which, hey, that’s what you’re supposed to do against the Pirates.

Zach Davies’ debut was a successful one. He ran out of steam a bit in the 6th – with the big blow coming in a poorly-located fastball that turned into a two-run homer just past the basket in left-center. Still, a couple runs on four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts over 5.2 innings? You’ll take that in the first outing of the year.

Not sure what to make yet of Rex Brothers’ partial inning of work. He got hit HARD after a flukey single to open the frame, including a near-100 mph double play ball that got him out of even more trouble than the run he gave up. Not walking dudes, for him, is great. But he can’t come in and get hammered like that, either.

Meanwhile, Craig Kimbrel looked nails once again. That was very, very nice to see just a day after he looked so good in his season debut.

Kris Bryant continued his hot start to the season, Ian Happ went deep, and a particularly fun moment
