First of all, Happy Jake Day!
But now that that’s out of the way, it’s time for the brass tax: the Cubs really need to win today. This is the third series of the season with the Brewers that has gone to a rubber match, and the Cubs have lost each of the first two. If they don’t start beating the Brewers, specifically, their chances at a large enough early-season first-place lead (the kind that could dissuade Jed Hoyer from blowing it up at the deadline) will evaporate sooner than we think.
Unfortunately, the Cubs have a tough matchup against Brandon Woodruff in today’s finale (he’s held the Cubs to 4 hits and 1 earned run over 13.0 innings so far (14Ks)). That said, Arrieta has been throwing the ball well and looked as good as this new version of Arrieta has looked his last time out against the Mets. He faced the Brewers two starts ago and allowed 4 hits and 3 earned runs in 5.0 innings.
Let’s win this one.
