With apologies, I had to duck out from the Cubs game in the 6th inning thanks to The Littlest Girl’s first Miracle League game. It appears I missed some fireworks. And some fire work.
In the meantime, it was nice to see that the Cubs came back to win this one and that the bullpen was absolutely nails for five innings of work. And how about the stones on Craig Kimbrel? A one-run game in the 9th, the first two guys single, and then he goes strikeout, strikeout, groundout to save the game and keep his own scoreless streak alive.
I’ll note that Zach Davies looked as good as he’s looked all year, which, um, doesn’t necessarily tell you a lot. The command was actually not at all bad for the first time this year, and without the David Bote error in the first, he likely gives up no runs through his four innings. He was not particularly efficient – lotta foul balls, wildness in the 4th – but absolutely his best location so far this year. That a low bar, but it seems like a much needed first step *IF* he’s going to turn things around.
