The Cubs get a 27th man for today’s doubleheader, and it’ll be righty Kohl Stewart joining them for game two, which is to be started by rookie Keegan Thompson.

Stewart, 26, is otherwise going to be in the Iowa Cubs rotation with Thompson for the early part of this year. Tonight, he might be the long man today if things go sideways quickly, or might just get an inning of work anyway to save another bullpen arm for the day. He was a low-cost flier for the Cubs this offseason based on the previous prospecting pedigree and the hope that they could turn his individually-nasty pitches into something more on the results side.
The Cubs lucked out with Kyle Hendricks saving the bullpen entirely in game one, so everyone should be available tonight if needed. You probably hope to get three innings out of Thompson, and then the final four will depend on the game state.
