(Update at the bottom).
First and foremost, I hope everyone in San Diego is fine and that this roster move is little more than a necessary precaution based on MLB’s health and safety protocols surrounding COVID-19. But second of all … it feels like it’s been a while since we had one of these, right? Do I just have some selective memory, here? The vaccines have been rolling out for a while now, and it certainly seems to have helped curb the spread – at very least, in MLB.
But, of course, COVID-19 is still out there and not everyone has been fully vaccinated, so the Padres have been forced to place Fernando Tatis Jr., Jurickson Profar, and Jorge Mateo on the COVID-related IL.
Due to health and safety protocols, the #Padres placed SS Fernando Tatis Jr. and INF/OFs Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo on the injured list today. The club will announce corresponding roster moves prior to tonight’s game at COL.

The wording certainly makes it seem like more of an abundance of caution than anything else, but obviously we can’t be certain from the outside. And, remember, players don’t need to have actually tested positive for COVID-19 (let alone display any symptoms) to be given this designation, but it does usually mean they were – at least – in contact with someone who does/did have it.
Again, here’s hoping everyone is fine and that everyone who can safely get vaccinated does. The Padres will play the Rockies tonight in Colorado, before heading home to face the Cardinals this weekend.
UPDATE: Fernando Tatis Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19, but is asymptomatic. Profar and Mateo are just out for contact tracing purposes.
Fernando Tatis Jr. tested positive for COVID-19, Jayce Tingler said. Tatis is asymptomatic. Jurickson Profar and Jorge Mateo are in contact tracing.
