The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were all the rage yesterday across the baseball web, not as much for their play – though it was good! – but instead for this baby that was making the rounds.
The Beer Bat:

I must drink it. I must have it. (Currently available only at Pelicans games, though their GM made a fun offer to anyone who wants to hit him up.)
But the performance – that’s what I wanted to highlight this morning to kick off your day. Because last night, not only did the Pelicans win, they won it in walk-off-dinger fashion. First baseman Matt Mervis, who’d just tied things up for the Pelicans in the 8th, walked them off with a big blast in the bottom of the 9th:

Mervis, 23, was an undrafted signee out of Duke last year, but you’ll recall that the draft was just five rounds. He was going to be drafted in a typical year, and he’s a big-time power addition to a system that’s kinda desperate for it. We were hearing a lot of buzz about him at instructs in the fall, and I suspect he’s going to be on most Cubs fans’ radars very soon.
More on the wild game, and the rest of the Cubs’ minor league system, soon from Bryan.
