Setting the scene here, as Tommy Nance was out there throwing darts, striking guys out, and Trea Turner was his final victim of the night. But the strikeout pitch got past Willson Contreras, to the backstop. Turner is quite fast, so throwing him out to complete the strikeout was going to be very difficult. And indeed, Contreras failed to do it, throwing the ball into the outfield.
… Except Turner was arguably a bit inside the baseline, and was called out for obstruction. Nationals manager Dave Martinez – old friend alert! – was rather angry about it:
