The Chicago Cubs just wrapped up an 18-9 May, which saw them climb from alone in last place (5.0 games back) in the NL Central to alone in first place, up a half-game on the Cardinals.
The final win of the month, yesterday against the outstanding Padres, was probably the best of the bunch. Not only did the Cubs win handily over a very good team, but they did it with a fill-in starter whom they were helping remake at Triple-A Iowa, they did it with offense from a minor league depth signing whose bat they sneakily like, they did it with a killer bullpen they built on the fly, and they did it with two of their healthy stars blowing up. There was just so much to like about that win, including who contributed, how they contributed, and how the whole thing looked and sounded. Because that game being at Wrigley Field with a 60% capacity crowd in attendance? That, too, made it a really great win.
Enjoy the highlights if you missed it or just want to enjoy again, from Kohl Stewart’s beautiful performance to the bullpen’s smooth ride to Patrick Wisdom blowing up to Kris Bryant with a huge game to Javy Báez dinging two and getting a curtain call:
