Eric Sogard Just Dove *Over* First Base for Some Reason (VIDEO)

Eric Sogard just did something I have never seen before. And not in the good way.

While trying to beat out an infield grounder, Sogard dove over first base. No, I did not say he dove into first base. I said he dove OVER first base. Yes, this is really what happened on a grounder to short:

I really don’t know the thinking here. I mean, it wasn’t even the *type* of play where you *sometimes* see a dive into first base (which is really only ever a decent idea when it’s a play in front of you and you might be avoiding a tag). So I have no idea why he tried it, and then I really, REALLY have no idea why he dove OVER the base. What on earth? Did he lose his footing or something? It sure didn’t look like it on the replays to me.
