It’s another late one tonight, as the Cubs are squaring up against the Padres with a 9:10 first pitch in San Diego. The Cubs have lost four of their last five games since sweeping the Padres and could really use AT LEAST one more win on this road trip before heading home to host the Cardinals.
Zach Davies is starting for the Cubs tonight, following a 4.1 IP, 8H, 4ER outing in San Francisco on June 3rd. I know the David Ross has been (justifiably) quick to pull him out of games before that pesky third time through the order, but the Cubs could really use some length out of him tonight. That’ll be a tough task on the road and against the Padres, but the bullpen needs a breather after covering five innings last night. Indeed, the Cubs bullpen has thrown the fourth most innings in MLB (2nd in the NL).
The Padres lineup is potent and Dinelson Lamet had his best start of the season against the Cubs his last time out, but … did I mention they could really use a win? Go Cubs.
