As expected, the Cubs are making another pitcher swap-out move before tonight’s game to reinforce the bullpen. Out goes last night’s “starter” Robert Stock, and in comes lefty Brad Wieck to join the team for tonight’s finale in New York against the Mets.
Stock did his best last night, but was ultimately asked to wear a rough outing, and now we’ll see if he goes back to normal relief work at Iowa. Stock was sent down via option, by the way, so the Cubs are keeping him on the 40-man roster for now.
Wieck has been in the up-down group of relievers this year, quietly posting a 0.00 ERA in his eight big league innings (27.3% K rate, 9.1% BB rate). He hasn’t broken back out like he was flashing late in 2019 (he was injured for 2020), but he’s been successful when called upon.
