Last night, Shohei Ohtani was in the HR Derby. Tonight? He’ll bat leadoff for the AL All Stars and take the mound as their starting pitcher. He is truly, legitimately unique and I’m thankful to get to see both him and Mike Trout in the prime of my baseball fandom.
Ohtani is followed by Vladito, another burgeoning superstar, and a lineup mixed with veterans and youngsters (including, eh hem … one perfectly affordable infielder I said the Cubs should target in the offseason, Marcus Semien). But I digress.
The NL side isn’t without star power, either. They’re leading the game off with the face of baseball, Fernando Tatis Jr., and are starting one of the most dominant pitchers of the last decade+, Max Scherzer. Former Cub Nick Castellanos is in there, as well.
All-Star Kris Bryant didn’t wind up making it as a starter, his season stalled out as Nolan Arenado’s picked up steam, but he will get in there eventually. Meanwhile, Craig Kimbrel looms in the bullpen as perhaps the most dominant reliever available on the NL side.
The game is at 6:30 tonight. Enjoy.
