Much in the way that I enjoyed yesterday’s win for what it was – a moment to be excited by a comeback, because whatever – today, I did not enjoy watching the bullpen implode. The Cubs tried to pull of the 9th inning magic again, including another two-out double from Rafael Ortega and a chance for Willson Contreras to play hero again, but it wasn’t enough.
Zach Davies was more or less Zach Davies (serviceable for five-ish innings, not great, not atrocious), but the bullpen was in trouble from the jump and throughout the rest of the game. The middle relievers right now are all kinda struggling.
The Diamondbacks tried, repeatedly, to blow this game – they are what their record says they are – with multiple key double-plays, including the what-are-you-doing-Kole-Calhoun one. But Eduardo Escobar’s late two-run insurance homer proved to be enough to keep them from blowing it.
At least it was a nice day for this guy …
