The Cubs won the game today, which may not matter in the grand scheme of things this year, but it was definitely fun to see Robinson Chirinos blow up today. I just love his story so much as a former Cubs prospect, finally coming back to the Cubs this year.
Of import today, Zach Davies was solid through five scoreless innings – very Davies-like – but was brought back out for the sixth despite being at 100 pitches. I didn’t quite get that. He allowed two hits, got an out, and then departed. Adam Morgan allowed those two inherited runners to score, and what looked – by the line score – like a perfectly fine Davies outing turned into kind of a meh outing against a bad Diamondbacks team. I don’t get it. Even if the point was to try to show trade partners that Davies could go six innings, it’s like, they already know who he is. We all do. Today’s game wasn’t going to change those opinions.
Kris Bryant had a more or less normal game today, with catches in the outfield and running on the bases. He did get pulled later on in the game, but it VERY much didn’t have the feel of anything meaningful – injury or trade – and instead was just related to it being a blowout with wet conditions.
Keegan Thompson goes three innings, and that might be the start of him getting stretched out for the second half.
