Cubs and Mets Still Talking, Mets Have Found Asking Prices Out There (Team Unspecified) to Be “Laughable”

Chicago Cubs

I know that there’s not a lot of time left before the Trade Deadline tomorrow at 3pm CT, but can we have a LITTLE time at least before having to process another major, emotional Cubs trade?

We’ll see. The Cubs-Mets stuff continues to bounce around – earlier reports had the teams talking about multiple players – with some updated reporting here:

We’ve been saying for a long time that if the Mets are looking at depth starting pitchers and impact, versatile positional guys – those have been the rumors! – then the Cubs are such an obvious fit. But I wonder if this is about the Cubs and Bryant, which is what the holdup is:

You can’t judge a comment like that without context, because – even if we assume it’s about the Cubs – we can’t know whether the asks really are laughable, or whether the Mets are just being overly stingy. Consider the big return the Cubs just got for Anthony Rizzo – that’s quite a bit more than I would’ve expected, and maybe another team would’ve considered that a “laughable” ask initially. But when you factor in the Cubs eating salary (maybe Mets don’t care about that?), the Rizzo return makes more sense.
