The Chicago Cubs made some roster moves before today’s game – no, not THOSE roster moves (yet) – swapping out some pitchers and opening up (and closing) a spot on the 40-man.
The moves and some important thoughts from Bryan:
Jake Jewell last 11 games in AAA:
17.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 BB, 21 K.
For season, RHH are batting 143/260/190 against the 28 year old. https://t.co/dhtZjPScY8

Jewell was one of the many minor league free agent signings the Cubs made late in the offseason, trying to reclaim interesting arms. He’s been fantastic at Iowa, but he’s kinda had to wait his turn to show what he looks like at the big league level. I love that he is getting the opportunity, because that’s what the next two months are gonna be all about. This is, I believe, his final option year, so the Cubs kinda need to know what he can do by the end of this season, allowing them to decide on his 40-man spot this offseason.
As for the other moves, we know the drill with Abbott, who is getting his up-down experience, and Stewart has been having a rough go of it since some early-season success. He hasn’t pitched since July 5, and I’m not quite sure of his injury, but it must not be great.
