It may be Willson Contreras’ Cubs, but he’s not in there against the Nationals today. Here’s David Ross’ very striking lineup for the finale in D.C.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
1. Rafael Ortega, CF
2. David Bote, 2B
3. Ian Happ, LF
4. Patrick Wisdom, 1B
5. Matt Duffy, 3B
6. Jason Heyward, RF
7. Robinson Chirinos, C
8. Sergio Alcantara, SS
9. Adbert Alzolay, P
With Contreras getting a breather and Nico Hoerner on the IL, this is probably one of the least recognizable Cubs lineups in years. Alas. It was always coming. But, yeah. Damn.
Anyway, the Cubs three third basemen have clearly settled on their short-term homes: Patrick Wisdom will play first base, David Bote will play second base, and Matt Duffy will play third base. Long term, I don’t actually think those will be the landing spots (would sure be a waste of a great Wisdom arm and glove at first base), but for the rest of this season, it’s fine. Even when Hoerner comes back, he’ll probably play shortstop.
Rafael Ortega looks to continue his hot streak and earn himself a spot on next year’s team (perhaps he has already?), Ian Happ looks to get back on track (he’s had a few nice games here lately), and Jason Heyward is still out there in right field.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ post closer to game time (12:05 CT).
