The Chicago Cubs dropped the opener in Colorado last night, and tonight they get a matchup against the rejuvenated Jon Gray.
Overall, Gray’s season looks strong (3.62 ERA, 3.64 FIP) and it’s actually kind of a miracle he’s still with the Rockies. Like the guy who went just before him, Kris Bryant, Gray will be a free agent at the end of the year and was a heavily rumored trade target through the deadline. Since returning from the IL on June 25th, Gray has tossed 41.1 IP of 2.61 ERA baseball with 45 strikeouts and 16 walks. It won’t be an easy matchup.
With that said, Alec Mills has had a pretty decent stretch, himself. Since joining the rotation on June 15th, he’s got a 3.63 ERA (3.44 FIP) with 32 strikeouts against just 10 walks. The highlight has been a 55.6% ground ball rate, which would serve him well in Coors Field tonight.
The Cubs aren’t playing for the standings, but there’s plenty of guys who are trying to earn a spot on next year’s roster. Let’s see what they can do.
