If there is a better way to sum up the Cubs’ 2021 season, I don’t know it.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Ian Happ lined a single to right field with two outs and runners on second and third. The first runner scored easily, and the second runner was scoring as Happ slipped, and was thrown out trying to get back to first base. It was a nifty/embarrassing play, but not really a huge deal, since two runs had scored and the Cubs were now up 3-0:
Except there was thereafter a challenge. The question was whether Happ got tagged out before Rafael Ortega stepped on home plate. We didn’t actually get an answer, so everyone headed into the 4th inning believing the Cubs were still up 3-0.
Except then the side scoreboard at Wrigley Field showed 2-0 Cubs several minutes later, even as the center field scoreboard still showed 3-0 Cubs.

What was going on? And then, just as we were getting word that the run HAD been taken off the board, Salvador Perez homered for the Royals:
“And the Cubs are still leading, either 3-1 or 2-1.” -Boog
Nobody had any idea what the score was after the confusion from Happ’s baserunning play. Turns out it’s 2-1, not 3-1 as the scorebug had it. 😂 pic.twitter.com/Hx2zXe7uLy

Perez homered as the score was being changed. So in a matter of seconds, a 3-0 Cubs lead became a 2-1 Cubs lead. I’ve never seen anything quite like that. Perfect for this season.
