The Dive for Five is still alive. If you’re entirely into “just get the best draft pick/bonus pool possible” mode, then seeing the Cubs get swept by the team that had been right there with them in the standings is about as good as it gets. Sorry if that offends, but we’re just being pragmatic.
Not that, in the abstract, you wanted to see the Cubs get blown out again by a bad team. Alec Mills had been really good of late in the rotation, but today the Royals were just banging out hit after hit after hit after hit. It wasn’t just Mills – by the end of it, the Royals had 16 hits on the day, a season high.
Rowan Wick’s velocity was down again today, and there’s no back-to-back appearance excuse this time (command was rough, too). It’s a concern. Maybe we can chalk it up to the lack of a normal ramp-up for the year, and obviously the tons of missed time. And that probably is the case – but that doesn’t mean he’s a lock to get it back next year.
Two hits for Frank Schwindel today, and that was the offensive highlight. Woof.
The Cubs sure helped this guy out …
