As we have celebrated Justin Steele’s good outing, welcomed Adbert Alzolay back off the IL, and been frustrated by Keegan Thompson’s slow start … it’s actually Alec Mills quietly having the most success. In his last start, Mills tossed 8.1 scoreless innings against the White Sox, bouncing back in a huge way after a bit of a tumble against the Royals.
And overall since joining the rotation in mid-June, Mills has a wonderful 3.68 ERA (3.25 FIP) over 13 starts, with a tiny 5.3% walk rate and an excellent 50.5% ground ball rate. If you keep those numbers around 5 and 50, a lower strikeout rate (like the one Mills is rocking) doesn’t really matter as much. He’s been good and it’s been nice to see. Hopefully, he keeps it up today at home against one of the worst offenses in MLB.
Go Mills. Go Cubs.
