Ian Happ has truly been on *fire* lately. And although he still has a long way to go to make us forget about his horrendous offensive first-half, he’s certainly been doing everything he can in that respect.
To that end, he’s got three more hits tonight and also launched his 20th home run of the season. That marks his fifth 3-hit game since August 17th and his 8th game in a row with at least one hit.

All told, that’s pulled his overall season line up to a 97 wRC+, which is just a shade below the league average. Considering where he was earlier this season, that’s truly an impressive feat. He’s going to have to stick the landing here in September to really convince some of his most ardent non-believers, but you have to like what you’ve seen from him lately. I’m especially happy to see him hit a home run, the other way, on a 97 MPH fastball at the top of the zone. That’s typically his kryptonite.
At a minimum, he should have completely erased any talks of a non-tender in the winter. The offensive upside we’ve seen over the last 2 months (from a relatively affordable, young player with two more years of team control) is too alluring to ditch completely. Like Frank Schwindel or Patrick Wisdom, you don’t want the Cubs to guarantee Happ a specific spot (or let his presence dictate other moves you’d like to make), but I think he should be considered one part of the 26-man 2022 Cubs roster.
