Another day, another flurry of roster moves for the Cubs. Some injury, some probably COVID.
Here’s the list:
Cubs moves:
• SS Nico Hoerner 10-day IL (right oblique tightness, retroactive to 9/28)
• RHP Cory Abbott recalled from Triple-A, will start tonight
• OF Nick Martini placed on IL (no specifics given)
• OF Johneshwy Fargas selected from Triple-A— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) October 1, 2021
Without an injury designation, and with the others presumably going on the COVID IL, we can fairly presume Martini is also going on the COVID IL. It’s a bummer that this is hitting the Cubs here at the end of the year, and hopefully everyone turns out OK.
Abbott comes up to take what would’ve been Zach Davies’ final start, but the Cubs elected to shut him down. Nice for him to get a final look this year after a REALLY hot run at Triple-A Iowa. Here’s hoping he can hold onto his 40-man spot, because I could see him being a useful reliever next year for the Cubs, even if starting doesn’t stay in his future.
Hoerner officially goes back on the IL with the oblique injury. Sigh. As for Fargas, he’s probably a borderline 40-man decision after the season, but I suspect he will not stick, and the Cubs will instead try to retain him on a new minor league deal.
UPDATE: Per Bastian, David Bote also goes to the IL with no injury designation. Tyler Ladendorf takes his place.
