Even in the moment, we knew just how improbable it was that Kyle Schwarber, just six and a half months removed from obliterating his knee, was returning to the Chicago Cubs for the World Series. For him not only to be in a physical place to play, but to able to face Corey Kluber after taking some swings down in Arizona? People don’t do that. But Schwarber did.
With the World Series starting tonight, I thought it worth sharing a reminder of what Schwarber did in the 2016 World Series five years ago. Lost for the year in just his second game of the season, Schwarber recovered with such pace and determination that the Cubs’ deep postseason run gave him a chance to be a bat in the World Series, where he went 7 for 17 with a double and three walks. His OBP for the series was an even .500.
