Welp, as expected, things are going nuts this weekend. The pitching market is still hot, Byron Buxton just signed an extension, and now the super shortstop market is getting started.
Remember those rumors weeks ago that Marcus Semien wanted to sign before the CBA expires? Well, he’s gonna do it. And the Rangers get their first big piece:
BREAKING: Free-agent infielder Marcus Semien is close to a deal with the Texas Rangers, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Semien has deal with Rangers. Believed to be 7 years. @ByRobertMurray on it

A seven-year deal for 31-year-old Marcus Semien. My word. Good on him, and good on the Rangers for targeting a guy they clearly believe is going to sustain his recent level of performance well into his 30s. But, uh, wow. That’s a lengthy deal.
More soon.
UPDATE: The AAV looks right, even if it’s probably a year or two longer than I would’ve expected (but like I always say, that’s how high-end free agency plays out every year):
Semien Rangers deal is believed to be for about $175M over the 7 years

Although this is a huge deal, I don’t know that it actually moves the expectations for any of the other shortstops on the market. Carlos Correa is still gonna be pushing for $300 million, Corey Seager is still gonna be pushing for a tick below Correa, Trevor Story is still gonna be pushing teams to forget about 2021, and Javy Báez is reportedly still looking to get a deal near the one Semien just got.
