Bryce Harper is Reportedly Trying to Recruit Kris Bryant to Join Him on the Phillies

Chicago Cubs

It’s no secret that Vegas boys Bryce Harper and Kris Bryant have long thought about playing together in the Major Leagues. While there was a time when that hope was with the Cubs, alas, they never seriously pursued Harper when he was a free agent, and he wound up on a long-term deal with the Phillies.

Now it’s Bryant who is a free agent, and his market has largely been a mystery both before and during the lockout. Pretty much all we know is that he’s not coming back to the Cubs. So how about finally pairing up with Harper?

That’s certainly his hope:

Bryant, 30, is coming off a handful of mixed seasons thanks primarily to injuries. When healthy, he’s been productive at the plate and versatile in the field, and he’s still going to be a very attractive free agent to a number of teams, even if I’ve always had questions about just how big his contract can really get. Harper, 29, is signed in Philly through 2031(!), so there’s still plenty of time for the two to play a whole lotta years together if there’s mutual interest.

I’ll watch this with interest not only because of the broader market impact – there’s a lot, even as Heyman’s short tweet implies – but also because there would be a SMALL CHANCE that if the Phillies did land Bryant, they might be ready to move on from Alec Bohm after his disastrous 2021 season. That might be an interesting post-hype option for the Cubs. I’m getting way ahead of myself, but I can’t help it. Transactions are back and the wheels start turning …
