Drew Smyly is picking up the ball today against the White Sox for his final tune-up of the Spring. After that, his regular season debut for the Chicago Cubs should happen this Sunday, after Kyle Hendricks, Justin Steele, and Marcus Stroman take the mound, in that order (more on the Cubs rotation plans right here).
As for the Cubs lineup, it’s more of the same: (1) Nico Hoerner is still drawing starts at short in the absence of Andrelton Simmons. (2) Jason Heyward keeps getting starts in center field against righties. (3) Jonathan Villar takes over third base for Patrick Wisdom against righties that like to use their fastball at the top of the zone.
But among the notable/semi-new things: (4) Seiya Suzuki has dropped down in the batting order lately. Early on this spring, David Ross had Suzuki batting second almost exclusively, but that may have been to maximize his plate appearances after a late start. That said, I actually liked Suzuki in the two-hole, but I’ll understand if the Cubs want to ease him in to his new league, batting lower in the lineup. Still, sixth is probably too low. (5) Rafael Ortega is the designated hitter this afternoon. I wonder how often we’ll see the Cubs keep his bat in the lineup this way, when it necessarily requires one of Patrick Wisdom or Clint Frazier to sit. Ideally, you’d have Heyward on the bench, Ortega in center/leading off, and one of Wisdom or Frazier in the lineup, even against a tough righty. But we’re beating a dead horse.
Just two games and three days left! Go Cubs!
