It’s not hard to anticipate the direction this might go for some folks, so I’ll offer my thought up front: I think Willson Contreras is just trying to show some love for a new teammate in a new situation. No backward-looking shots intended.
Here’s the money quote, offered to the Daily Herald: “He’s the best player that I’ve ever played with, to be honest,” Willson Contreras said of new teammate, Seiya Suzuki. “His plate discipline is insane. Everything that he does on the field, the way he takes care of himself (on) and off the field is amazing.”

Obviously Contreras has played with some very good players in his many years in the big leagues, and we all know who they are. By contrast, he’s played with Suzuki so little that it seems a bit extreme to say he is already the best player Contreras has ever played with. Then again, I mean, he’s the one right there evaluating Suzuki. Do we think he wouldn’t know what a star looks like if he saw it?
Again, there’s definitely some level of just-offering-love-for-a-new-teammate in there, but also, I suspect Contreras just truly evaluates Suzuki as being an impressive player. Star-caliber. (I try to stay chill about Suzuki’s potential upside, but you’re making it very hard, Willson!)
As for Suzuki’s response to the Daily Herald when he was told of the praise from Contreras? Here’s your smile for the day:
Suzuki was almost in disbelief when told of Contreras’ high praise. After smiling, he said the following through an interpreter: “Obviously Willson’s a player that’s been playing here for a long time and he’s been one of the greatest catchers in the major leagues. To be able to hear something like that for is something I’m very, very thankful for.”
