What is it with exceptionally bad on-field brawls this week? We had the college pitcher literally leveling a baserunner as he rounded third, and now we’ve got the Binghamton Rumble Ponies getting into a literal rumble.
Mets minor league pitcher Marcel Renteria was having a tough third inning, having just loaded the bases with two outs, and was undoubtedly hoping he could get out of it against Red Sox prospect Tyreque Reed. Instead, he just clipped Reed’s hand. Renteria said some things – angrily to himself? angrily at Reed for not getting out of the way? – and Reed was really unhappy about it. So he said some stuff back, Renteria responded, and then Reed decked him:
Oh no. Benches cleared in the Binghamton-Portland game. Pitcher Marcel Renteria took a punch to the head. pic.twitter.com/tu7wSjjO3C

Looks like Reed is coming out of it as the only one penalized. There were definitely some Rumble Ponies escalating the situation but it's hard for the umpires to tell who's who with cold weather jackets and hoods on.
Note that Brett Baty had already been ejected for arguing a K.

You could see at one point, Renteria may have been confused about who he was trying to go after – a player had tried to break it up – and, in either case, clearly wound up getting the worst of it. He looked quite injured.
