Drew Smyly Scott Effross is opening for the Cubs tonight in the first of two games against the White Sox at Wrigley Field. Smyly was supposed to take the start, but he’ll hit the bereavement list and be replaced by Robert Gsellman for at least the next three days. Between Gsellman, Sean Newcomb, Keegan Thompson, the off-days (yesterday + Thursday), and Stroman’s lengthy outing on Sunday, the Cubs are in a good position to weather this storm in terms of innings.
In terms of effectiveness? Well, that’s a different story.
Opposite Effross for the White Sox is Michael Kopech, who hasn’t been able to give the White Sox more than 5.0 innings in any of his four starts this season, but has also allowed only 3 earned runs. He’s been fairly wild – and there has been some hard contact in the air – but with the weather being bad and the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field (at least as of now) that might all play to his advantage tonight.
Speaking of which, the rain could push this one back tonight, but hopefully we fit it all in. Go Cubs.
