Baseball America’s Updated Top 100 List Features Four Cubs Prospects (Kinda)

Chicago Cubs

Today, Baseball America released an updated Top 100 Prospects list, and it now includes FOUR Cubs prospects. Well, kinda.

With some graduations and modest adjustments (you won’t see MAJOR re-rankings until midseason), there are now four Cubs names on the list, but I have to drop the “kinda” in there because it includes Seiya Suzuki (32 overall), who retains prospect eligibility by BA’s standards for about one more week. Brennen Davis (15) and Cristian Hernández (79) move up slightly because of graduations.

The real update here is that outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, today named the Cubs prospect of the month for April, is now solidly on Baseball America’s top 100 list. The graduations on the list in the first month of the season (plus one prospect dropping) allow PCA to make his debut all the way up at 95 (second among the new entrants). On a full re-rank, it’s possible he would already be considerably higher.

The short version offered on PCA’s ranking from BA: “A 2020 first-round pick the Cubs acquired from the Mets in the trade for Javier Baez, Crow-Armstrong has the calm approach, exceptional plate discipline and growing power to be an impact hitter. He pairs that with instinctive, graceful defense in center field and has a chance to win Gold Glove awards.”

Given how much he’s exploded at the plate so far – it’s early, but it’s been so impressive – I’ve gotta believe that PCA is gonna be all over these top 100 lists come re-rank time. Hernández won’t be on every top 100, though, so the total volume of “top 100” prospects in the Cubs’ system come July is going to depend on how the various services evaluate the first half of the season for the many fringe-top-100 types.
