Another injury. It’s a lot at this point. Almost too many to keep track of, but I’ll make sure to do a round-up for tomorrow’s off-day.
For today, it’s lefty reliever Sean Newcomb going on the IL with a left ankle sprain, suffered while out in the outfield during batting practice on Sunday (pitchers are often shagging balls out there). So that really sucks.
Mark Leiter Jr. returns once again, taking Newcomb’s spot on the active roster and presumably in the bullpen. In the right situations – limited exposure, mostly – Leiter has shown himself to be a perfectly passable option out there. In that regard, I’m not sure how much the Cubs “lose” in this swap, but they had been trying to help Newcomb turn the corner in his career, so that’s what you don’t want to see lost in the weeks/months ahead.
