Wade Miley is taking the mound for the Cubs tonight, facing a Pirates lineup with … five true lefties and two other switch hitters. Obviously, the switch-hitters will bat from the right side of the plate, but I’m still a little surprised the Pirates don’t have more natural righties around. After all, Miley has carried pretty significant splits throughout his career:
LHH: .236/.301/.351 (.289 wOBA)
RHH: .275/.338/.435 (.335 wOBA)
Better take advantage, I guess?
A fellow lefty, Dillon Peters, is making the start for Pittsburgh, though he’s more of a swing starter/opener this season. So if all goes well, you shouldn’t see him past the third inning. But don’t mistake that for the sign of an easy matchup. In his last start, Peters held the Dodgers scoreless on just two hits (no walks) over 3.0 innings. And for the season, he’s earned a 1.83 ERA over 19.2 IP.
Peterson has been very good at managing the hard contact this season, but he has been a little wild at times. So perhaps the Cubs can beat him with some patience. I would like to not be behind the Pirates in the standings, so … come on, Cubs. Win.n
