Caleb Kilian’s exceptional season at Triple-A got a bit more exceptional today, and the calls to see him up with the big league team are really going to start to get louder.
Arguably the top Cubs pitching prospect, Kilian was dominant once again, and you can see the conversation reaching something of a fever pitch:
Caleb Kilian gives up a leadoff single and then proceeds to go strikeout, dribbler 2-unassisted, and strikeout.
Worked at 96 with the fastball, 89-91 for the cutter and dropped one good hook. Here are a few nasty pitches. pic.twitter.com/vzsvYGxxs7

My plan, for the record, would be to use Kilian as the 27th man for the May 30 and June 4 doubleheaders. And then make a decision if he sticks around or continues from there.

He can't be too far away from him big-league debut. https://t.co/wUL0D9x6nz

Even if you don’t expect Kilian to stick in the rotation for the remainder of this season, there is going to be a time – very soon – where you’re going to want to start exposing him to big league batters, for his own development if nothing else. Kilian, 25 next month, is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after this season, so you’re going to have to put him on the 40-man by November no matter what. And if he’s not getting enough out of the competition at Iowa, then it’s just a pure development play to get him to face big league bats before 2023, when you might want him as a rotation regular.
… and, you never know. He might be *ready* to pitch really well against big league bats right now, and help the Cubs *try* be in a race come July. I think it’s unlikely that the Cubs will be good enough – Kilian or no – to go that route, but it’s not impossible. And if Kilian is ready to help in that regard, well, then, better sooner rather than later.
I suspect we’ll be hearing more on Kilian, like Bryan suggested, as soon as May 30 for that double-header.
