The Cubs might’ve asked Fergie Jenkins if he had an inning or two in him today since he was at the park anyway, and maybe he could keep the ball down …
On the day celebrating Jenkins and the dedication of his new statue outside the ballpark, the wind was howling out like we haven’t seen in quite a while. The Cubs hit four homers, but the Diamondbacks took even more advantage and hit a whopping seven. It was one of the less exciting 16-run games you’ll see, particularly for Cubs fans. The “best” moment probably came in the 7th when the Cubs actually had a chance to tie it, but Alfonso Rivas struck out with the bases loaded to end that threat.
It was just not a good day to be a soft-tossing fly-ball pitcher at Wrigley Field. That doesn’t excuse anything, nor does it provide comfort on Kyle Hendricks going forward. It’s just a statement on today’s reality. He obviously wasn’t the only pitcher who got stung by the long ball.
That said, not all the Diamondbacks homers were wind-aided (two of the Cubs’ four definitely were), and I’m not quite as able to be positive about this game like I was last night.
At least Christopher Morel had another nice game? And the Fergie statue looks great? Willson Contreras’s ejection was kinda funny?
