There just aren’t any layers to that game that do not suck. Starting pitcher got battered. Bullpen stank. Offense quieted down. Seiya Suzuki got hurt. The Reds unnecessarily drilled Willson Contreras. David Ross got ejected (again). The game had a long rain delay and then came back to be finished so that the Cubs had to use even more arms.
Oh, and the Cubs gave up 20 RUNS TO THE REDS. Yeah, that’s a bad one.
For a couple innings, it was looking like Steele was going to duplicate his last two outings against the Diamondbacks (it was, in theory, another favorable match-up). But he stopped hitting his spots in the third, and holy smokes did the Reds not miss his mistakes. Even Scott Effross couldn’t come in and stop the bleeding, which means you KNOW it was a bad day for the Cubs’ arms.
And it was. Every single pitcher today gave up at least one run. Just nothing redeeming. Not even this:
