The Cubs couldn’t get it done in Game 1 against the Brewers, stranding runner after runner after runner. But they’ve got a lefty, Drew Smyly, on the mound this evening, which could help tame some of those Milwaukee bats (the Brewers offense has been one of the worst vs. LHP all season).
Speaking of Smyly, he’s been consistently “fine” all season, almost always delivering something between 4-5 innings with 2-3 runs scored. He won’t strike many batters out, but he doesn’t give up free passes and he usually limits hard contact. In fact, he has the second lowest average exit velocity in MLB (84.5 MPH) and a solid 48.4% groundball rate. Basically, he’s exactly as advertised. Now let’s see if he can salvage Memorial Day for the Cubs.
