Justin Steele is stepping out on the mound tonight, following the worst start of his career — at least, in terms of innings pitched (2.0) and runs scored (7ER). But the bigger bummer is that it came after two of the best starts in his career, both against the Diamondbacks (combined): 11.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 4BBs, 19Ks.
Fortunately, the Brewers (84 wRC+ vs. LHP, 26th in MLB) like the Diamondbacks (73 wRC+) are one of the worst offenses against left-handed starters this season. Then again, so were the Reds (79 wRC+). So who knows.
Meanwhile, the Cubs are facing another lefty, Eric Lauer, against whom they’ve been just a shade over league-average this season (101 wRC+ vs. LHP). But Lauer has been pretty darn good all year, including a 1-run, 7.0 inning, 11-K performance against the Cubs almost exactly one month ago. The Cubs struck out 15 times total in that game, though two of the biggest offenders, Nick Madrigal (3Ks) and Michael Hermosillo (3Ks), won’t be in this one.
Go Cubs.
