Tonight’s was the kind of performance that deserves immediate spotlighting, because this is one of the best Cubs pitching prospect performances of the last decade. Arguably right up there with Caleb Kilian’s famous Arizona Fall League championship game.
Cubs pitching prospect D.J. Herz was already know for being an extremely prolific strikeout artist (40.4% last year at Low-A, 32.3% this year at High-A coming into tonight), but tonight he WENT OFF: over 5.0 scoreless innings (one hit), Herz struck out a whopping 12.
So many exclamatory statements I want to make. There are only 15 outs, total, in 5.0 innings of work! He struck out 12 of the 17 (71%!) of the batters he faced! And yet he still made it through those five innings at just 75 pitches! That is a 21.6 strikeouts per nine innings pace! It’s more than the Kerry Wood pace!
I’m sure we will have much more to say on Herz’s night – and his near-term future (promotion to Double-A Tennessee coming?) soon.
